UNIPORT protest, killing, plot to sack me – VC

THE Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Ndowa Lale, has said that the protest carried out by the students of his institution, which led to the death of a student, was a ploy to remove him from office.
Lale made this claim on Tuesday when the Acting Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Mobolaji Odesanya, visited UNIPORT to ascertain the level of damage in the institution during Monday’s protest.
The students had demonstrated against the institution’s policy of ‘No fee, No exams,’ a development that led to the killing of one of their colleagues.
The vice-chancellor explained that he was suspecting that the protest was not ordinary, adding that there was a possibility that the students’ demonstration was sponsored.
He said, “I understand that some of them (protesters) are in touch with some other people who for whatever reasons want me, the VC, out of office.  Therefore, they think that if they do this protest that the vice-chancellor would be removed from office.”
The vice-chancellor said that the management regretted the death of one of the protesting students, Mr. Peter Ofurum, but denied knowledge of the circumstances that led to the death.
Lale stated that the protest had nothing to do with hike in tuition, but bemoaned that the act was masterminded by students, who wanted to be certified without sitting for any examinations.
“As a university, we sincerely regret and mourn with the family of the deceased. I hear a student died in some circumstances that are not very clear to me. I regret it so much that such happened.
“All you hear is that the VC increased fees. Firstly, in federal universities, we don’t pay tuition, government only allows us to take some charges which we use to provide students certain services.
“The charges that are being paid today in this institution were negotiated last two years under the administration of Prof. Joseph Ajienka, the former VC of the institution.
“I have just stayed nine months, during this period and I have not contemplated or dreamt of increasing any payment by a kobo.
“The students know it, but because they want to score cheap points, they are misleading the public. UNIPORT students want to acquire degrees without writing exams. If such schools existed, I would have attended because I sat for exams in all the schools I attended.
“Last semester, we also went through tough times in order to ensure that the students sit for exams and they wanted to go on rampage. This time it is standard practice that students must register to be bonafide members of a school; that is all we asked them to do,” he said.
He, however, argued that the policy of ‘No Fees, No Exam’ was not strange, adding that “nobody goes to school without payment.”
In his remark, Odesanya, who is also the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, said the command was set to carry out autopsy on the murdered student.
Odesanya said, “We heard of a corpse that was recovered. This corpse has been sent to the mortuary ready for autopsy. Apart from that, no other report of death.
“The police did not move into the campus until late 9pm when the VC wrote officially to the police to move in because we have no right to move in when we have not been given the permission to do so.

HOW TO SURVIVE HARD TIMES IN NIGERIA VOL. 1

HOW TO SURVIVE HARD TIMES IN NIGERIA VOL. 1

To make hard times a thing of history in Nigeria ,we don't have to wait for the government to do everything for us. The situation of Nigeria will continue to go worse if  we abandon our leader with the burden and blames of bad economy.we can help our self survive the hard times and have a good standard of living.
Go through this edition carefully and make use of every point outlined in the write up.

1. Learn to draw a scale of preference.
Some people may begin to wonder, what do I have to do with a scale of preference? Am I an Economist? Well, i guess you will forget your name/course of study if the hardship persists. You just have to understand that at this present situation of our country, everybody needs to economize their limited resources to meet the unlimited human needs. Always make a list of “scale of preference”, choose from the list the needs that you have to meet first, compared to the available resources (money) on you at that particular period of time, and you can satisfy other needs has soon has you fetch more resources. This will help you to conveniently manage your little income.

2. Be Self Employed.
In Nigeria, we believe we are educated so as to secure a government job, or depend directly or indirectly on the government. NO!  We are wrong; We are educated to be independent, so I wonder why a university or college graduate would sit at home for four years under the flimsy excuse of not being able to secure a government job. Mind you the population of Nigeria is sky rocketing compared to the drowning available resource, so in this situation the government will never be able to provide job opportunities for all the educated masses. Before you get out the school system as an undergraduate, get something doing and be devoted to it. A photographer or a painter is not too bad. These are jobs that can be learn in a short period of time or learn by reading EBooks online. It is your packaging and branding that takes you to the apex.

3. Do It Yourself (DIY).
As defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary, DIY is the act of doing or making something (as in wood-working or home repair) without professional training or assistance. In other way it is an act of doing things based on one's own initiative. I learnt from my father Elder Ayodele Felix that a rational man should be able to fix menial faults in his vehicle. Do you need an electrician to fix a lamp holder? Or call a furniture maker to re-attach the broken door of your kitchen cabinet? This are little things you can get done by yourself instead of calling a professional that you would have to pay.DIY will help you to save more cash.

4. Family Planning To Curb Over Population.
Over population is one of the major factor that has been drawing back the development and growth of our dear country, imagine a family of eight where the total income is fifty thousand naira(#50,000) just tell me how they would satisfy the total want of the family with such an amount of money. This will affect the well being of the family and thereby extend to the population at large; poverty will begin to set in as a result of this. In case you don't know that in every over populated country the dependency ratio is always greater than the working population ratio, with this type of population distribution, a country can never maximize her available resources. So therefore couples should adopt the family planning method in order to curb over population. In a country like Nigeria a family shouldn't be more than five (5) i.e. the father, the mother and three children.

5. Stop Depending On Your Parent at the Age Of 18.
Maybe you don't know that at age 18, you are constitutionally an adult, because you now have the right to vote and carry out legal responsibility. Due to Nigeria faulty economy you may still get your school fees at home from your parents but you don't have to make it a habit calling home every weekend for money. Don't get me wrong, I am not asking you to get involved in illegal act to make money. Even while you are still on campus there are a lot of things you can do to make ends meet e.g. pedicure and manicure, setting up laundry services, photography, painting, helping classmates to type their assignments, hairdressing. With little or no training these are jobs that can fetch you money while in school (You can learn by reading eBooks online).

6. Have a Garden.
Agriculture use to be the back bone of Nigeria economy before the discovery of crude oil. Thereafter, there have been shortage of human resources in the agricultural sector of the country because of the diversion of federal government from agriculture to crude oil and this has resulted to inflation in the price of agricultural products, this tends to consume a high percentage of individual income. Therefore having a garden can actually help you save a lot in the sense that you can easily get vegetable crops from your garden instead of spending money to buy it.

Just 2 days after Unilag , embarked on an indefinite strike action, due to students protests, its counterpart in Ondo state, Adekunle Ajasin University ,Akungba Akoko AAUA also had its own portion of the strike cake on the early hours of Sunday 10th of April 2016.
Following a mass protest that was staged by he students on saturday 9th of april 2016, in respect to a 200level student that had an accident and was taken to the health Centre, but was not admitted, that he should be transferred to Owo, the students requested the ambulance to immediately rush the dying student to owo, but was also turned down, that there was no fuel in the vehicle.
This rendered the dying young man, helpless, till he gave up. The students on Saturday moved out, barricaded the road, destroyed the health Centre facilities and also brought cooking equipments to the school gate.it was confirmed that the students slept at the gate and woke up this morning (Sunday) to continue their protest.
However the management, via their AAUA broadcast platform, sent text to the students at about 7am Sunday 10th April, to vacate the school premises with immediate effect, as the school has been locked down till further notice.
